Then a young college grad who had a POS car before that he had acquired because it was in such bad shape that it was a take as it is for free kind of POS Dodge Neon. So now he was pretty much broke, looking for a job and a car to get around in and came across Gregs listing online. The young man "Theodore" had been getting the used car salesman pitches and loan wrangling until he saw Gregs car which is in pristine shape inside and out for a 2008 and 110,000 miles on it.
So Theodore came on a weekday night via the help of his friend to drive him whom he lives with at the time. They both looked the car over and were astonished at how clean it was, and that Greg had all the "maintenance care" details in a folder and was pretty much open about everything with the car and take it or leave it.. A lot different than the used car salesman who will tell you anything you want to hear and try to get you to sign on the dotted line before you leave that night. So Theodore said he'd call Greg back and let him know if he could get the money together with his dads help.
He called Greg the next day and told him that his dad was loaning him the money and he'd only have to pay half of it back.. So they set up the day as Thursday night that he would come by and purchase the car. Now Greg assumed that his friend would just drive him back out.... But, not so. On Thursday night Gregs watching the basketball game and Theodore is running late, but calls to say that they are stuck in traffic but on there way.
When they "Theodore and apparently his girlfriend" arrive, I'm coming down the stairs and I see and hear Greg at the door looking into his billfold and discussing that he could have brought the car to him on a Saturday morning but that he'd have to go and get the money.. and I walk up to the door as Theodore is again willing to explain to me that he feels like an idiot that he took a cab and now doesn't have enough cash to pay the $100 (whether that was the entire charge or what was left in addition to what he had in his wallet is unclear).. So as I stand there with him at the door where he needs to stay in sight of the taxi driver.. He repeatedly tells me how embarrassed he is, what an idiot that he is.. did I tell you that he lives in Marina Del Rey for crying out loud that is a LONG taxi ride not to know what it will cost you.. But he's 22 and I just assure him that mistakes happen and that we all make them.. and then Greg returns with the money and he runs out to pay the cab driver and out pops his girlfriend from the backseat.. holding her ransom I imagine while the driver waited.
So now they move onto the business end of the transaction, Theodore assuring Greg that he will pay him back. Greg just gave him his business card with his address written on the back and said he was trusting his integrity to pay him back, but in Gregs mind he was happy with the price he got on the car and should it not end up being paid back it was a small price to have lost out of the sale.
Once it was all said, done and signed over and copies made for our records.. We went outside and they looked the car over (her first time seeing it) and her oohing and aahing over how clean and nice it looked (compared to his previous car). They drove off.. We kind of wondered if we had chosen the right "guy" to take our dependable and reliable car considering how it started out with us "loaning" him money just to arrive at our house..
Now we had a good laugh about it, and kind of were more inclined to write it off as the night wore on and we moved on.. On Thursday a week later in the mail arrived a check from Theodore and a nice note thanking us for trusting him to front him the taxi money. So very good ending to selling our very good car...
